Ocean Energy

I am playing with the idea to pursue a career in green energy. It is a subject that has always interested me so I have been doing a bit of research these days.

I came a cross this website called SEAI (Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland) that has very interesting information. What caught my eyes was the section on Ocean Energy.

OceanĀ  Energy includes, wave, tidal and offshore wind power:

  • Wave power is the extraction of energy, usually in the form of electricity from the up and down motion of waves.
  • Tidal power is the generation of electricity from the horizontal motion of tidal currents in the sea
  • Offshore wind power includes wind turbines which are either floating structures or are attached to the sea-bed

Apparently the average wave power in Europe is highest near the west of Ireland with an average theoretical power of 525TWh within the total limit of Irish waters. This is a lot if we consider that the total electricity requirement for the republic of Ireland in 206 was 27.8TWh of electricity!
