Life is good

Tuesday, June 26th, 2012

Lately I have been going through a rough patch. Sometimes you have to remind yourself what is important in life so you do  not get down into a ditch that you can not get out of it.

In order to remind this to myself this week’s craft is about Life and how good it is :)

Did you even hear about the company Life is Good? It is a company created by two brothers in Boston that they started to sell t shirts with the life is good motive on them. I always find them so uplifting. So I decided to bring this idea into my house hold.

I did a cushion with the Life is Good motive! I cut in felt the letters life is good and then I stitched them to the cushion. What do you think?

I love it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

As a good Mediterranean I like to cook with olive oil instead of butter or other animal fat. I always try to use as little as possible since even if it is vegetable oil I do not like greasy food. However, there is always left over oil!

Putting the left over of the oil down your sink is not good. One litre of oil can damage a thousand litres of water since oil can not be dissolved in water. Oil stains on the surface of water can reduce the oxygenation of water and hence difficult the respiration of fish and plants.  What is the solution? to treat the residual waters. However, oil is actually interfering with a lot of the deputation machines so it is much better to collect the oil individually and treat it before it gets into the water.

This is how the oilpot was born! In Barcelona they started last year to distribute to the households this pot (the olipot) that you can put your left over oil and then bring it to the local recycling facility for them to look after it. I think it is a brilliant idea!

Crafts of the week

Sunday, June 17th, 2012

I have been very busy lately so I did very simple easy crafts this week!

For ages my husband complained that I always was leaving needles around. I know, it is dangerous! tell this to my Dad! my mum always does the same and once he actually got pinched with one when he sat down in the couch! poor Dad!

So I decided to do a little heart and fill it with stuffing and now I am using it to place the needles. I think it looks cute!

I also painted a little bird house that I got in Michaels. That store is amazing. Please, please, open one in Europe!

I would be going with Ryanair anywhere in Europe to get to any of these stores. I love it!

This bird house is for my balcony. I feel it really needs an improvement. I will let you know the results!

Did you ever hear of Eco-Balls? They are these balls that are normally kept in circular containers that you place inside of your washing machine. They are chemical-free, residue-free, 100% hypollergenic and anti-bacterial. They are the natural alternative to conventional washing powders!

What do they do? they produce ionised oxygen to penetrate powerfully into fibres, lifting always dirt without fading colours or damaging delicate fabrics. This means that you do not need to put cleaning powder in your washing machine. Only by placing these balls in the circular containers there is enough to clean your clothes!

Eco-Balls not only save on heavy shopping loads, they are reusable for over 1,000 washes and cost normally only around 3p per wash.

I have tried them and they are wonderful! so please embrace the green future and buy them!

You can buy them in many supermarkets or in amazon

Thank you Cards

Friday, June 8th, 2012

This is the last post on my wedding crafts! I hope you have enjoyed them and I did not bore you too much with the details!

The tradition in Catalonia is that as soon as you receive a wedding present you send a business card saying thank you. We did our own business cards with the wedding logo and our names on it and then we send them in the same envelopes used as the RSVP and with a stamp we had made ourselves.

In Ireland normally you send the thank you cards after the wedding since a lot of people give you presents even after you get married!!!!!I find this strange since our guests from Catalonia even gave us presents two months before we got married!!!

In the thank you cards you normally put photographs from the wedding. I had a lot of menu cards left over so what I did was to use them as thank you cards. We changed them a little bit.  We removed the big shell from the front and we changed it with small shells. Inside we had several photos from our wedding in one side and the other side was free for writing the thank you! We wrote personalise things to everybody I hate generic thank yous!!! Plus our guests had taken time to come all the way to Spain for our wedding, they deserved to mention that little memory you had of them or that little explanation on what you would do with their present!

A couple of months ago I went to the knitting and stitching show in the RDS or as I like to call it the knitching show. I got great stuff for my craft creations and I had a great time. The show is great for buying products but is also a brilliant source of inspiration!

One of the great things I bought were ceramic buttons. I intend to use them in one of my new challenges, knitting!

The buttons are super cute and original. They are ceramic and made by KaroArt ceramics. You should look at their website. If you want to  buy products they have a shop in ETSY.

Here are some of the trully amazing products:

I am not sure if you all know what Allotments are. Since I am not a native English speaker the first time I heard the word I had to ask ” allot what?”

Allotments are a small area of land, let out at a nominal yearly rent by local government or independent allotment associations, for individuals to grow their own food. It is a wonderful idea for people with small gardens that are itching for some space to have their vegetable garden. I know my friend Jen has one and she really makes a good use of it!

If you are interest on it you should check the Irish website allotments where you find information where you can find allotments and other important information such as:

  • How to put the squeeze on local authorities to make allotments available.
  • How to begin on a blank canvas.
  • How to sow and plant.
  • Looking after your crop.
  • Pest and disease control.
  • Organic practices.
  • Harvesting.
  • How to use your harvest in the kitchen.
