Reupholster furniture

Tuesday, November 27th, 2012

When my Mum and Dad got married they did not have much money. So they tried to save as much as money as possible. Furnishing their new home, with brand new furniture, was not on the cards for them. This is the reason why my grandparents let them to use some old furniture from their shed. The funny thing about this, is that the furniture was actually very very old! it had been used by many generations in my family. So old, that my mum and that had to restore it!

My mum always liked the furniture but recently she wanted to give it a new modern look. So she reupholster the couch and the head board in their bedroom and this is the result:

I really like the contrast of old and new. Do you like the fabrics? we got the one for the couch in ABC carpet and home in New York, and the one from the bedroom is from a really cool fabric store that I recommend if you are in New York. This super place is Mood Designer Fabrics, it is a shop that is worth to visit they have really good quality fabrics a very discounted price. In there, I bought the fabric for my wedding dress. Do you know that it was used for one of the costumes in a Broadway show? I love these little bits of history!

If you need a tutorial on how to reupholster furniture go here

Maybe you do not want to go so far to buy fabric. I actually found a really good store in Ireland. They sell a lot of fabric for upholstering and they have a clearance section with fabrics at 20€ per metre!! the place is Finline furniture and they are located in Emo.

Here there are some of the fabrics you can find there:

SOLVINDEN solar/wind-powered lights

Saturday, November 24th, 2012

I was in IKEA recently and I saw the SOLVINDEN light series. I was very impressed!

In this series they have lights that they are operating with solar energy, but they are not your usual boring white lights, they are nice and colourful. Some of the lights are even shaped as animal and plants!

Here you have some examples, the lightening chain:

The most impressive lights of this series are the lights that operate with WIND and SUN!!!! they are not only impressive but interesting for us since we do not have so much sun in Ireland but we have wind all year around!

They also look very cool, take a look:

Ann and Barry

Wednesday, November 21st, 2012

Every time I talk with my sister about her house she tells me the same thing, that she needs a bigger home!

My sister, her husband and their two daughters live in a small apartment in Barcelona. She lives quite close to city centre and being such a big city the space is precious. So the apartments are small.

Most of the interior magazines feature big homes that the normal people will never be able to live in. This is why I like this company Ann and Barry. They have fun, practical and space saving furniture for children.

If my sister would be able to buy from them I can assure you that she would buy a couple of things for her girls 😉

Take a look at their web site and why not visiting them? they have a showroom in Mullingar, Co. Westmeath

Male party decorations

Sunday, November 18th, 2012

I went down to Spain a few weeks ago to celebrate my uncle’s 70 birthday party. All my family was looking forward to the party. This is because my uncle had a stroke last year. So this party was not only to celebrate his 70’s, but also the fact that he is now well and back in action!

My mum wanted to do a few things for him so she made a really funny film about my uncle’s life that was shown after the lunch but she also wanted to do something else decorating the venue.

I gave her a hand. Since my uncle was absolutely adamant that every body going to the party had to wear a tie. And he even treated all men by not letting them in, if they were not wearing a tie…. We decided to make a little joke/decoration with ties.

We got old ties and bought some others from the Euro shop and hung them from a tree from where the food was going to be served. Then we placed flowers on the ties that were held by a pin that said Made peace and not war 😉

It was an absolutely hit every body thought it was hilarious. My uncle even told me that if anybody arrived with out a tie I had to tell them to pick one up from the tree!!!!

Here is how they looked:

Then for the tables, instead of numbers my mum had a year of my uncle’s life going down from 70. The years were not consecutive there were important years of his life. Like when he got married or had children…

Here is how it looked:

Also to follow the joke with the ties we did place names for the table that were ties for the males and bow ties for the females.

Rug made of t-shirts

Thursday, November 15th, 2012

I am constantly thinking on ways to recycle things that I have around the house that I do not want/use any more.

My lovely lovely has tonnes of t-shirts. I know he would never let me, but I would love to put to a better use all those t-shirts that are too old to wear.

I think I can convince him to donate the t-shirts to do one of my crafts 😉 I found a brilliant tutorial on  how to convert old t-shirts in a design looking rug!!!

This is how the final product should look:

Fabric Box

Friday, November 9th, 2012

Sometimes crafts do not work out well. This is one of those times.

My husband brought home some file boxes that people in work were giving away. I had seen a cool tutorial in you tube about how to cover boxes with fabric so I wanted to give it a try.

The problem was that my fabric  (an IKEA cotton one that I had) was too thick to glue it into the box. I had to use super glue and then I hand stitched together the different parts!

Here is how it looked before:

Here is how it looked after!

Magazine box

Tuesday, November 6th, 2012

My husband and I go through a fair amount of magazines. I do like buying interior design magazines and he likes to buy photography ones. I do always recycle them but even so I feel guilty to use to much paper.

I would love to try to give a second life to those magazines before I recycle them.  So I started to look on line what I could do with a bunch of magazines.

And look what I found!

If you want how to do it, read this tutorial!!!
